Using Novels in English Teaching Classroom
Learning literature can
be learned interestingly through learning media, one of which is by using an
English novel. novels can be used as an interesting media in learning English.
In using novels in learning English in the classroom, it has many benefits. Siajj
and Farrah (2018) stated that novels can motivate students to enrich their
cultural knowledge and improve their language ability. In addition, novels can
also develop students' abilities in the fields of reading, speaking, and listening.
Novels are a medium of learning that is rarely used in the classroom. However,
using novels as a learning method can also be said to really attract the
attention of students.
When I was in high
school, my teacher once tried to use novels in English lessons. At that time, she
told us to freely choose the English novels that we wanted to use. After we
chose, our teacher told us to look for the tenses used in the book, we were
told to find as many as possible. At that time, this method was not effective
enough for my class, because most of the students in my class didn't really
like reading. As a result, many of us tend to feel bored with this learning
method. Honestly, in my opinion, it is very interesting to use novels as a
learning medium, but maybe the way of application is less interesting.
If I am given the
opportunity to teach English using this media (novels), I will try to find a
way that is as interesting as possible so that students do not feel bored and
instead feel challenged. I want the learning method that I provide is not only
fun but also able to hone the skills possessed by students. If the text in
novel is interesting to your students and they understand it, their language
skills will improve (Martina, 2016). I will choose short novel students whose
language structure is not difficult for them to understand. Then I will
photocopy one of the contents of the novel section for my students. Later, I
want my students to work in groups so that the assignments I will give them are
not too heavy. I will share different parts of the novel for each group. I want
them to look for at least 5 difficult words on the photocopy sheet that I
provide, to train their reading skills. Rebecca writes that the use of
literature circles during your novel study teaches students how to cooperate,
take turns, and have engaged peer discussions. After they find it, I will
discuss it as a discussion process for them. This can increase their English
vocabulary. The importance of vocabulary in acquiring a new language has been
stated by several experts (Murtiningsih et al.,). To practice their speaking
skills, I want some group members to try to read the conversations in the
novel. Other groups have to listen carefully to practice their listening
skills. If a conversation is read by the group that is wrong, the other group
is obliged to correct it and they will get points for doing that.
