Short-movie As an Effective Media In ELS

Movies has become one of
the entertainment media that is favored by almost all groups, including
teenagers. Of course, movies have many genres and languages. Some movies have
educational content so that they are good to be shown by teenagers who are
still in school. Therefore, movies can be one of the media that can be applied
in English lessons. But of course, not everyone agrees on this.
Some people think that by
watching movies, students become lazy. However, if students are given an
educational spectacle, this can actually help students' thinking power. They
will think critically about a movie that they watch. According to Trisnani et al.,
2021 the application of critical thinking in the world of education is needed
so that organizing students can make a productive contribution in society. They
will try to capture the meaning implied in the movie, and they will get a moral
message from the movie. Another positive thing that is obtained from watching
films is that they will be imaginative and creative because of the movies they
watch. They will also be motivated by the movies they watch. Implementing movie
clip in English class makes an interesting atmosphere which improves not only
students' motivation but also students' English proficiency (Syahrozi et al., 2019).
Apart from these positives, I believe there are also many negatives side. But
of course, if students are shown movies that are appropriate for their age, they
will also not be carried away by these negative sides.
Short movies can also be
used as a media in learning English. Using movie as a text in the English
classroom helps to level the playing field as most students are equally
inexperienced in movie analysis (Hasanah, 2014). Through short movies, we as
teachers can create creative and interesting learning innovations to develop
students' speaking and listening skills for the Senior High School Students. Siska
(2015) stated that one of the authentic media which can be used in teaching
speaking is movie or film that reflects the real use of English language in
daily life. At the beginning of the
lesson the teacher can show pictures from movies that may be quite famous and
the students know it. When showing the pictures one by one, the teacher can ask
questions about the title of the movie as an ice breaker before starting to get
to the core of the learning material. The teacher can show a movie or clips that
can motivate students such as, The Greatest Showman, Freedom Writers, and other
films. The films watched are given English subtitles so that students who are
less proficient in listening to dialogue in English can read the existing
English subtitles. After that, students are divided into groups to discuss what
message they get after watching the movie or footage that has been given. Then, still
in groups, students were asked to give 'one' sentence which they thought was
the most memorable to train their memory. Later, students are given the task in
groups to choose one of the movies they know. Their task is that they have to
present the results of their collaboration in front of the class to practice
their speaking skills, the content of the presentation is about their opinion
about the movie they choose, and what moral message they get after watching the movie.
